To make the sport of baseball more interesting, Konami decided to replace uninteresting humans with Super Hardcore Fighting Robots. They shred balls with a minor swing of the bat. They run hundreds of mph, as long as their wheels are oiled properly. And, when robots from opposing teams disagree, they use guns instead of words and fisticuffs.
This should all make for one amazing baseball game. Unfortunately, whoever is controlling the in-game camera is obviously a human who can’t keep up with the amazing robot hit power. When you hit a ball into left, right or center field, the camera scrambles to catch up to it. If your team is playing the field, this is a nightmare when you’re trying to look for the ball with a robot outfielder. The computer is crazy hard, and if you happen to get ahead, don’t be surprised when they pull ahead of you in the last inning.
At least the robot fights are awesome. If you win, you’re safe, but if you lose, you’re out. You can also customize your robots with upgraded weaponry and repair them after they’ve taken lots of damage.
Base Wars’ challenge is a large drawback, but the presence of gun-slinging robots helps ease the frustration. A flawed, fun take on the potentially boring game of baseball.
