In Captain America and the Avengers, it would stand to reason that you could play as Iron Man, Hulk, and other Avenger favorites. Nope. Only Hawkeye and Captain America are available. This might sound like a paltry complaint, but it’s annoying to only be able to play as two characters when the title implies an entire superhero team.
Captain America… itself is a “light” action game, if such a sub-genre exists. You throw your shield and shoot your arrows at baddies around none-too-crowded side-scrolling levels. After you beat the first level as Captain America, you can select from one of two different paths. Will you venture to Montgomery, Alabama with Cap or head to the Mississippi River with Hawkeye?
Power Stones – collected via canisters generously placed in each level – increase your life bar, give Cap’s shield an extra boost, and Hawkeye’s arrows some explosive power. Watch out for the swirling black stars on the map. If touched, you head into a mid-boss battle. And speaking of battles, there’s also a Battle Mode, where you and a friend can fight using – yes! – Captain America against Mandarin, Ultron, or Crossbones.
All this should make for a superhero game that’s more exciting and inspired than it actually is. You’re better off with Batman.
